Solid Advantages Charging Up the Battery Industry

The energy storage landscape is looking for alternative battery designs to meet the critical requirements of a rapidly expanding electric battery market. Of the new battery designs in development, all solid-state batteries (ASSBs) are positioned as one of the most promising developments in the market. ASSBs design innovations have the ability to break through energy density plateaus, optimizing manufacturing designs and costs.

With ASSBs primed for commercialization, sustainable manufacturing initiatives, such as ASSB recycling, need to be implemented to help bring ASSBs into alignment with the green energy revolution. Additionally, ASSBs will require the proper analytical testing technology to support ASSB recycling, advancements in innovation, and maintain the pace of development necessary to break into the battery market. Advantages of Solid-State Batteries

Traditional battery designs, such as LIBs, are still demonstrating optimized performance but are starting to plateau in the areas of energy density and cost of manufacturing. ASSBs will enable battery manufacturers to break through the energy density ceiling, while potentially mitigating manufacturing costs.

All this of course has onward impacts for recycling of ASSBs in order to optimize manufacturing and improve sustainability. The advantages of implementing ASSB recycling include mitigating raw material acquisition and optimizing the supply chain, reducing the negative environmental consequences of battery development, and ensuring the battery industry maintains a healthy impact on society and vulnerable groups. ASSB recycling will rely on a collection of physical processes and analytical methods to provide data to inform the initial assessment of recycled material. Therefore, analytical testing equipment will play a fundamental role in both the characterization of the re-synthesized recycled ASSBs and the crucial reduction in the environmental and social impact of ASSB development.

The Future of ASSBs
As ASSBs begin to enter the battery landscape, the large range of potential applications combined with an impressive amount of functionality optimizations will position ASSBs as a leading contender to surpass LIBs. Widespread adoption will drive rapid global utilization of ASSBs and result in similar waste quantities as LIBs. Thus, it is imperative that sustainable energy technologies incorporate recyclability into their manufacturing process, as it will encourage reductions in environmental, social, and manufacturing costs.
